The House of Trees

Born in the quiet village of Teggar, Lchang Nang — “The House of Trees”. It is a retreat shaped by stillness, sunlight, and heritage. Created for travellers seeking peace, it blends comfort with simplicity, allowing Ladakh’s rhythms to set the pace. Owned by the Kalon family, whose roots in the region span generations, Lchang Nang grew from a desire to practice tourism with care. Solar power fuels the retreat, glacial snowmelt provides pure drinking and bathing water, and plastic use is consciously limited by small choices that honour Ladakh’s fragile landscape. The spirit of conscious luxury flows through everything here: traditional architecture, locally inspired cuisine, and a deep respect for culture and community. Even the produce tells a story — Amaley, the retreat’s organic range, is crafted from family orchards using heirloom wisdom passed down over time. At Lchang Nang, the past is gently preserved, the future thoughtfully protected, and every stay becomes an invitation to slow down and reconnect.

At Lchang Nang, experiences unfold gently. Step into a traditional Ladakhi house where the kitchen - the heart of the home - doubles as a living museum, lovingly preserved by local women. Your arrival is marked with warm butter tea, local snacks, and a graceful Ladakhi welcome. Days here are shaped by discovery: cycle along the old Silk Route on the world’s highest motorable roads, hike to pristine lakes, or join farmers in seasonal harvests and orchard picking. As evening falls, gather around a glowing bonfire communal or private sharing warmth, stories, and silence under open skies. Culture comes alive through occasional Ladakhi dance and music performances, while mornings begin in the traditional kitchen, learning to bake Khambir and brew butter tea. Sip freshly made tea or sea buckthorn juice at the shared tea station as birds flit through the valley - binoculars in hand, wonder guaranteed. And when night deepens, settle in for a movie under the stars, wrapped in mountain air, popcorn in hand, Nubra’s vast sky overhead.

Food at Lchang Nang unfolds gently through the day, rooted in place and tradition. It may begin outdoors with a Picnic or an Outdoor Packed Picnic, where tea, coffee, and light bites accompany you amid open meadows or on the road as you explore Nubra. As the afternoon deepens, you’re invited into the land itself through The Farm Table, where a walk through Tsas-Spang farm leads to a simple, fresh lunch inspired by Ladakhi agricultural traditions. Closer to evening, golden light sets the mood for a Sundowner (with Cheese and Beverages) - enjoyed at the Sumur Sand Dunes, in quiet meadows, or beside your cottage with a bonfire. When night falls, experiences turn intimate and immersive: BBQ and Stargazing at Sand Dunes pairs Himalayan skies with warmth and conversation, while Dining Under the Elms offers a thoughtfully curated five-course degustation beneath towering trees and stars. For deeper cultural connection, the Chef’s Tasting brings Silk Route-inspired flavours to the table, while hands-on Culinary Experiences like Momo Making and traditional Ladakhi Cuisine invite you to learn, cook, and share. The journey culminates with the Karakoram Dining Experience, set in a 400-year-old ancestral house, where a simple Ladakhi meal becomes a quiet tribute to history, hospitality, and life along the ancient Silk Route.

At Lchang Nang Retreat, your stay begins with a quiet sense of belonging to the land. The cottages are not imposed on the Nubra Valley but gently shaped by it, built using traditional Ladakhi techniques with mud, stone, and poplar wood. These natural materials are chosen for a reason: they insulate naturally against extreme temperatures, age gracefully with the climate, and allow the structures to breathe, just as homes here have for centuries. Winding footpaths, ancient trees, and open sit-outs invite you to slow down, making the journey to your room as meaningful as the stay itself. Inside, the design is intentionally simple and grounding. Whitewashed walls, earthy floors, wooden ceilings, and large windows create calm, light-filled spaces that open directly to gardens, mountains, and wide Ladakhi skies. Every room is positioned to respect natural light, existing vegetation, and uninterrupted views reducing the need for artificial intervention. All of the cottages have their own private garden and sit out offering mountain views. Based on the placement of century-old elm trees, some cottages even have hammocks for true relaxation in nature. This way of building reflects a deeper philosophy: to live in harmony with the valley, reduce ecological impact, and offer guests not just comfort, but an authentic connection to the earth and the rhythms of Ladakh.
