NEW TOURISM CONCEPTS SINCE THE 2000s

Are you a Shah Rukh Khan or Saif Ali Khan fan? Are you somebody who has seen the first logo on Instagram and has been fond of the scented erasers? If you could feel a nostalgic void just by reading these things, you’re a certified 2000s baby. And apart from all these materialistic differences, we’ve also observed a lot of ideas evolving since the 2000s. Without a doubt, the tourism industry has experienced quite a lot too. Apart from infrastructural and technological advancements, there are a bunch of novel tourism concepts that have garnered attention and are worth reading about.

CREATIVE TOURISM

This term refers to the kind of tourism people undertake where they involve themselves with the creative facets of the destination they’re visiting. Since the 2000s, travellers have wanted to connect with the cultural and creative nuances of the place more and more and hence, they try to indulge in the local practices and activities of the tourist spot such as taking up a set of cooking classes or learning the traditional dance forms practised there. Travelers look forward to knowing about how and what cultivates creativity and not the way people do it.

CULINARY TOURISM

For most people like me, travel translates to food sometimes and what have you seen in your trip if you haven’t explored the street food of the place? As it is, if there is anything today that does not stress you out, it is food so why not travel for food? Culinary tourism is a way to do that, travellers fond of food and beverages go on trips to places where they expect good food exploration experiences and take up activities like wine tasting and fireless cooking other than trying fine dine-ins and street food stalls.

DARK TOURISM

This is a fairly popular mode of tourism amongst the youth. Known for visiting sites with a dark history, this concept is called ‘dark tourism’. People who are fond of adventure and thrill find it amusing to visit destinations that have a dark reality added to their names. Often forts and palaces considered haunted, or places related to deaths and murders are on the list of such tourists who are interested in exploring dark tourism.

VOLUNTOURISM

Earlier, travel was considered a luxury concept, where only the wealthy people travelled to spend quality time with their family and friends, gradually this notion evolved as people started travelling because of their work and there was a visible shift in the people travelling- middle class started travelling much more than usual and now, concepts like voluntourism make travel easier for people who have little resources to afford the trip easily. Voluntourism makes people travel and also makes them volunteer for a social cause like teaching the underprivileged children of that area so that these travellers and the inhabitants benefit each other equally. This makes the tour meaningful for people and adds depth to their lives. It has been observed that youth are fascinated by this concept and often look forward to volunteering for the same.

EXPERIENTIAL AND IMMERSIVE TOURISM

This kind of tourism gained prominence after the 2000s when people believed that they should immerse themselves into the culture and traditions of the place they’re visiting because that would be the true meaning of travel. People want to keep their stays authentic and invest more into the natural factors of the trip where they can engage more and more with the locals, stick to the natural sites and employ themselves in local learning-based activities.

Apart from these, several other kinds of trends and concepts have contributed to the evolution of the tourism industry since 2000 like ecotourism and staycations. If you wish to know more about them, scroll through our website and voila! You're welcome.
