Gen-Z Travel

Travel as a concept gets redefined by everybody who does it because it is purely based on experiences. Two people going to the same place in a difference of 2 months may have entirely different stories to tell and hence, travel trends change after every while. What the word travel makes me think about is probably poles apart from what it does to my father and thus, in my experience, the generation gap is real in this industry. 20-year-olds are more enthusiastic about climbing a mountain than a 40-year-old, so, why not discuss what our Generation Z wants to adopt in the name of travel?

Generation Z, aka GenZ, is referred to as that generation that was born between 1997 to 2012 and happens to be in their teens or 20s now. This batch has seen a lot, right from the digitalisation of each and everything around them to the ban of TikTok. Meanwhile, a lot has changed in the tourism industry as well and GenZ has healthily contributed to it. This generation is determined to distinguish themselves from the previous ones and their travel trends justify their claims. Let us read further to understand this generation better.

PICKING DESTINATIONS

GenZ likes to invest in the urban culture and the natural spots and wants to strike a balance between both. As much as they like city life, they also want to travel to the offbeat, lowkey destinations for a refreshment. This generation has a knack for exploring the unknown and untouched spots and hence, adventure is sought after. GenZ wouldn’t settle for a traditional itinerary, they would customize every possible aspect and pick activities according to their interests.

ACCOMMODATION

GenZ is a batch that is well aware of the environmental issues and fortunately is the most thoughtful about it as compared to others. So, in order to make their travel eco-friendly and sustainable, they make sure to search for hostels, eco-lodges, Airbnb and green initiatives to accommodate themselves. Along with this, the atmosphere of hostels and Airbnb seems to be more likeable to the youth.

WORKCATIONS

This trend is a relatively new one for everybody. The youth is visibly very fond of travelling and exploring, but in order to strike a balance between their work and travel, they have come up with a new concept known as “workations”. As the name suggests, people opt for ‘work from home’ mode and in meanwhile travel too someplace desired. This way, they work and travel simultaneously and do not fail to fulfil their professional commitments.

ETHICAL TRAVEL

The youth attempt to contribute to the environment while travelling and adopt ways in which the least harm is caused to the ecosystem. Because of such initiatives, concepts like ecotourism and community-based tourism are gaining popularity amongst the youth. GenZ is actively looking forward to voluntourism where people come forward to volunteer for a purpose and travel alongside because of the same. Apart from this, the youth are also concerned about their carbon footprints, so they try to make sure they prefer trains over flights and take up walking tours to minimize carbon release.

 BUDGET-FRIENDLY TRAVEL

GenZ is pocket smart if not anything else. They look up to experiences more than the materialistic elements and make sure that they have the time of their lives while travelling without worrying about how they will preserve them in their memories forever. Unlike the older generations, GenZ is not fond of shopping for souvenirs or dining in the most famous restaurants of the place, they prefer to turn on their intrepid mode and explore the streets. They prefer to spend on adventures rather than the typical luxuries.

SOCIAL MEDIA

As the digital generation, GenZ makes sure that they consult their Instagram feed before deciding on their next trip and research the destinations via influencers. So, the power of influencers is visible in the tourism industry as well, especially amongst the youth, as they take recommendations from their ‘influencers’.

Are you a part of the GenZ? Do you agree with the above-mentioned points?
