The beauty of Shilloi lake – a lone, serene water body amidst the mountains, appears to be a place straight out of a fairytale story. Which is very fitting, considering the many local legends associated with it. This unexplored wonder is located in the Phek district of Nagaland, and it is even close to the Indo-Myanmar border. Thus, you would need an Inner Line Permit to visit this sister state of the North East of India.
Shilloi lake is also known as Lütsam, that translates to ‘a place where water is collected’ in English. There is also a village with the same name nearby, that is embraced by the tranquillity of the Patkai mountain range.
The shape of this lake resembles that of a huge footprint and it rests above the sea level of 1,200 meters. This lake is the largest natural lake that is located within the southeastern district of Nagaland. The best time to visit this lake is during the period from October to April.
In order to get to the lake, you need to first get to the Dimapur city within Nagaland. You can get to Dimapur either by air or rail travel. Then you can either hire a taxi or utilise the services of the bus to get to Shilloi lake. The travel distance will take you about 7 to 11 hours. It is a long journey, but the tranquillity and peaceful accommodations available here ensure the comfort and warmth of a home away from home.
As it is the case with most folklore, there are variations to the same story. With the Shilloi lake, it is said that a baby was found in the center of the lake, and by the looks of it, it seemed like a pair of hands was keeping her afloat. The people so many years ago believed that she was the queen of this lake and the baby and the lake were protected by spirits. That is why to this day many believe that nobody has drowned in this lake because of its protective nature.
On the other hand, according to the beliefs of the indigenous group, Chakhesang Naga, that live in the Phek district, say that a woman fell in love with a man from another village. However, due to differences in the tribes they belonged to, the members of their respective tribes did not accept of their relationship. Therefore, it is said that, she was so heartbroken that her tears led to the formation of this lake, and that is why some even say that the shape of the lake appears to be that of a heart.
People visit this lake to enjoy boat rides on clean and clear waters. Others choose to spend the time with a fishing rod in hand and immerse themselves in tranquillity.
On the other hand, if you prefer bird-watching, then you could expect to see bird species such as the Siberian Cranes, which are migratory in nature and thus can be seen during the winter months. You could even get a chance to see other birds such as hornbills and flycatchers, among others.
You can also visit the Indo-Myanmar border, that is located in the very last village of the Phek district of Nagaland, known as Avakhung village. This village is about 55 years old and is located about 290 kilometers away from the Phek district.
Located about 10 kilometers away from Shilloi lake, lies a village so remote and peaceful, you will truly feel like in a world away from the world of hustle and bustle.
People visit Phokhungri village in Nagaland to hike to the Seymülongcham (Melancholy Stone), which is monumental rocks that rest on a hilltop. It is about a 20-minute walk from the village, and here you will get to be see the cross built by the church members of the village and enjoy majestic views of an ocean of clouds and mountain peaks.
This town is located about 7 hours away and it is known as Nagaland’s ‘mini-Switzerland’. It is the highest-altitude (6,998 feet) town, making it also the coldest town of Nagaland. Here, you can enjoy a hike to the Glory Peak and delight in the beauty of cherry blossoms, especially during the winter season.
If you are fascinated by the lakes of North East of India, then do check out the Loktak lake of Manipur. It is the only lake in the world, that has a floating national park, Keibul Lamjao National Park. This lake is made up of Phumdis, which are heterogenous, biomass matter that float on the lake, thus these are also known as floating meadows. During the rainy season, the size of the lake expands to about 500 square kilometers from 250 square kilometers. In fact, there is even a day dedicated to this lake that is known as Loktak Day (15th October).
