The journey continues with a two-night stay at Tso Kar, a saltwater lake nestled in a remote valley, which serves as a crucial habitat for migratory and endemic birds. Here, keep your lenses ready for sightings of the Black-necked Crane, Tibetan Snowcock, and Chukar, all set against the dramatic high-altitude desert. A night at the stunning Tso Moriri Lake follows, offering another chance to spot rare birds such as the Ibisbill, along with surreal reflections of the mountains on the lake’s surface.

Itinerary

Arrive in Leh. You will be met by our representative who will help you to transfer to the hotel.


Birding in Leh, and the outskirts, itself can be highly productive, and the hotel environs themselves will showcase many of the common birds of the area, including House Sparrow, Western Yellow Wagtail (S), Tickell's Leaf Warbler (M), Sulphur-bellied Warbler (M), Common Chiffchaff (S+M), Mountain Chiffchaff (S+M), Barn Swallow (R), Red-rumped Swallow (S+M), Common House Martin (S), Black Redstart (R), Large-billed Crow (R), and some raptors. Overnight stay at Leh.

Today, your guide will take you for a birdwatching session around Leh. We will have ample opportunities for birding, as well as visiting some sites around Leh. You will return to the hotel with a lovely photo album. Overnight stay at Leh.


Key Species: Water Rail (W), Corn Crake (W), Spotted Crake (W), Baillon's Crake (W), Great Bittern (W+S), Little Bittern (M), Solitary Snipe (S+W), Upland Buzzard (R), Pine Bunting (W) and Reed Bunting (W).

Today, you will travel to Tso Kar. Reach Tso Kar and check into homestay. Later, go birdwatching with your guide. Return to the homestay in the evening. Overnight stay at Tso Kar.


Key Species: Plateau Pika, Ladakh Pika, Woolly Hare, Little Owl (R), Red-necked Phalarope (M), Himalayan Snowcock (R), Tibetan Snowcock (R), Black-necked Crane (S), Ibisbill (R), Brandt's Mountain Finch (R), Great Rosefinch (R).

Spend the full day today birdwatching at the Tso Kar area. Overnight stay at Tso Kar.


Key species: Blue Sheep, Tibetan Gazelle, Kiang, Eurasian Magpie (R), Ground Tit (R), Eversmann's Redstart (W), White-crowned Penduline Tit (W), Horned Lark (R), Red-throated Pipit (S)

Today, proceed to Tso Moriri for bird watching and photography. Return to Tso Kar in the evening. Overnight stay at Tso Kar.


Key species: Bar-headed Goose (W), Greylag Goose (S+W), Red-crested Pochard (R), Northern Pintail (R), Little Gull (W), Upland Buzzard (R), Golden Eagle (R), Saker Falcon (R), Eurasian Bittern (W), Lesser Grey Shrike (M), Eurasian Jackdaw (R), White-throated Dipper (R), Song Thrush (W), Spotted Flycatcher (M+W), Eversmann's Redstart (W).

Today, you will leave the lakes and travel back to Leh. We shall be stopping en route for bird watching and photography. The landscape is breathtaking as you cross the high mountain passes. Overnight stay at Leh.


Key species: Chukar Partridge (R), Alpine Chough (R), Tibetan Sandgrouse (R), Little Owl (R), Black-necked Crane (S+M).

You will be driven to Leh airport for your onward journey.

Good to know

Dos:

  • Rest for at least 24 hours upon arrival to acclimatize to the high altitude.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water or fluids (avoid alcohol).
  • Cooperate with locals, porters, guides, and drivers.
  • Respect the local culture and environment.
  • Avoid using polythene; Ladakh is a polythene-free zone.
  • Dispose of all waste properly.
  • Carry an identification card (passport, voter ID, driving license, etc.) along with a photocopy.

  • Do not wear denim; it is not suitable for trekking.

Preventing Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS)

  • AMS can affect anyone at altitudes above 10,000 feet
  • Leh is situated at 11,500 feet above sea level
  • Common symptoms include headache, disturbed sleep, nausea, breathlessness, fatigue, and lack of appetite
  • Rest for the first 24 hours after arrival
  • Stay hydrated and avoid alcohol or smoking
  • Keep warm and avoid physical exertion on the first day
  • Take Diamox if recommended by a medical professional
